Choosing a Tax Return Preparer

Choose your Accountant and Tax Return Preparer Wisely:

The Internal Revenue Service Recommends that you:

• Determine the Credentials of your Preparer.

If you choose a  Certified Public Accountant (CPA) be aware that the CPA provides personal and confidential services to individuals and businesses all year long. Those who are licensed CPA's have met stringent education and experience requirements, and must pass a complex uniform national exam. CPA's earn 40 credit hours per year of Continuing Professional Education (CPE) , adhere to professional standards and a strict code of ethics as required by the New Jersey Board of Accountancy who regulate all NJ CPA's. A Certified Public Accountant can represent you in all matters concerning the Internal Revenue Service.

 Inquire how Fees are determined.

Taxpayers should always avoid preparers who claim they can obtain larger refunds than other preparers or those who guarantee a refund or who base fees on refund results. These are all unethical and illegal practices.

Obtain References.

The most reputable tax return preparers will always be willing to provide references.
